About Brunswick House

Brunswick House has been a cherished holiday retreat for our family for the last 20 years. We have completed extensive renovations in August 2012 so it is now available to rent.

The ground floor and lower ground floors are available to be rented. The ground floor consists of a living room in the bay window on the left of the house with the kitchen behind. The master bedroom is in the bay window on the right of the building with en-suite bathroom to the rear. Downstairs in the lower ground floor, there are two further en-suite bedrooms.

Although the house can sleep up to 10, we strongly recommend that there are a maximum of 6 adults. For more than 6 people, the beds are fold down Z beds.

We can configure the master bedroom as just a double or we can add 1 or 2 Z-beds

Lower ground bedrooms can be configured as king size double, twin, triple, quadruple or double with twin or single.

IMPORTANT: The house does have a quirky layout whereby there is shared access to the two privately owned apartments above, through the centre of the house between the master bedroom and the kitchen. This has never been a problem for us but please see the plans in the photo gallery if you are concerned.

History of the house

The original date is not known but it was altered by J. Cross around 1854-79. Originally it did not have the large bay windows it now possesses. Mr. Richard Hoare and his family used to stay here each year, until he inherited North Lodge in 1886. In 1899 a Mrs. Thomkinson (sister of Richard Hoare) is listed as occupying it.

Before and during the 1939-45 War Mr. and Miss Ellis Rogers ran it as a boarding house, until one day a bomb fell through the window, made its way down to the basement, and then fell at Mr. Rogers feet unexploded. After that he and his sister went to Newmarket to live for a few years, returning to Brunswick House then St. Margarets Terrace, Cromer, later. At the same time as this bomb fell, another fell exactly opposite the Gangway, at the bottom, on a cafe. It exploded and completely demolished the cafe, which has since been rebuilt.
